Rubber Gym Flooring Installation Guide

Installing rubber gym flooring is a straightforward project when the proper preparation and installation methods are followed. Whether you're building a home gym, commercial fitness centre, school weight room or recreation facility, taking the time to prepare the subfloor and correctly install your flooring will help ensure years of reliable performance.

This guide outlines the general installation process for Summit Rubber's rubber gym flooring products. While installation methods may vary depending on the flooring style and application, these best practices provide an excellent foundation for achieving a clean, professional-looking result.

Before You Begin

Proper preparation is essential for a successful installation.

Before installing your flooring:

  • Store the rubber flooring in the installation area for at least 24–48 hours to allow it to acclimate to room temperature.
  • Ensure the room is climate controlled with a consistent temperature.
  • Complete all overhead construction, painting and other trades before installation begins.
  • Inspect all flooring for damage or manufacturing defects prior to installation.
  • Verify that you have received the correct product, quantity and colour before beginning.

Prepare the Subfloor

A clean, smooth and dry subfloor is critical for proper adhesion and long-term performance.

The subfloor should be:

  • Structurally sound
  • Level and free of significant cracks or depressions
  • Clean and free of dust, dirt, grease, wax or paint
  • Completely dry before installation begins

Concrete, plywood and approved wood subfloors are commonly used beneath rubber gym flooring. If necessary, repair uneven areas using an appropriate floor patch or levelling compound before installation.

Plan Your Layout

Before applying any adhesive or tape, dry-lay the flooring to determine the best layout.

Plan seam locations carefully to minimize waste and create a balanced appearance throughout the room. For installations using multiple mats or rolls, stagger seams where practical and ensure all pieces fit correctly before making any permanent installation.

Measure carefully and trim flooring using a sharp utility knife and straight edge. Replace blades frequently to ensure clean, accurate cuts.

Install the Flooring

Depending on your project, rubber flooring may be installed using pressure-sensitive flooring adhesive, polyurethane adhesive or Summit Rubber's ProTac Industrial Flooring Tape.

Begin by positioning the flooring in its final location. Fold back one section at a time and apply the recommended adhesive or ProTac tape according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Carefully roll the flooring back into place while working outward to eliminate air pockets and wrinkles. Press the flooring firmly into the adhesive or tape to create a strong bond.

Continue this process until all flooring sections have been installed.

Finish the Installation

Once the flooring is installed:

  • Inspect all seams for proper alignment.
  • Remove any excess adhesive immediately.
  • Roll or firmly press the flooring to improve adhesion.
  • Keep foot traffic to a minimum while the adhesive cures.
  • Avoid moving heavy equipment onto the floor until the recommended curing time has passed.

Following the adhesive manufacturer's cure schedule will help ensure maximum bond strength.

Cleaning After Installation

After the flooring has fully cured, clean the surface using a damp mop and a pH-neutral cleaner designed for rubber flooring.

Avoid petroleum-based cleaners, harsh solvents or abrasive cleaning products, as these may damage the rubber surface over time.

Routine sweeping, vacuuming and occasional damp mopping will help keep your flooring looking its best.

Installation Tips

  • Allow flooring to fully acclimate before installation.
  • Always work on a clean, dry subfloor.
  • Use sharp blades for cleaner cuts.
  • Plan your layout before applying adhesive.
  • Follow all adhesive manufacturer recommendations.
  • Maintain consistent room temperature during installation.
  • Protect the finished floor until the project is complete.
